Hey there and welcome to JillyMama’s! This is where I sew creations from cast-offs.
What does that mean?!
I make bags, pouches, pencil rolls and prayer flags from materials that other people have discarded — including clothing (t-shirts and pants), scraps and rescued fabric stashes.
Hey JillyMama, are you REALLY saving the world one pair of pants at a time?
Uh…no…well…MAYBE! Did you know that the average American trashes nearly 65 pounds of textiles a year? If all 300 million Americans recycled just one t-shirt, we would recover 210 billion gallons of water and keep 1 million pounds of CO2 out of our atmosphere!
Read “Eight Insane Facts About Textile Waste” here.
I do use SOME new materials, but the majority of materials I use are recycled.
I began upcycling clothing out of necessity – I had the urge to create and didn’t have the money to buy new fabric. Now I’m completely addicted to the thrilling art of creating something new out of something old.
What IS Upcycling?
Upcycling is the process of using waste material to produce something that is often better than the original.
